Ex-DFB chief Keller criticises interim president Koch

Former German Football Federation (DFB) president Fritz Keller has lashed out at past and present DFB officials for being selfish and not serving the federation.

“The problem in the vast majority of cases are officials who don’t look at football but only themselves,” Keller told Wednesday’s edition of the Sport Bild weekly. “It is time that this comes to an end.”

He said these officials treated the DFB as “a self-service shop” and he singled out vice-president Rainer Koch, who together with Peter Peters is acting president after Keller’s resignation earlier in the year.

Keller said that Koch “in my opinion lacks any moral compass, has been forging intrigues for years, putting people inside and outside of the DFB under massive pressure with his clique.”

Keller reigned in May after comparing Koch, who is a lawyer, with Nazi judge Roland Freisler. He said he regrets the incident but has not heard from Koch after apologising to him.

Keller said the DFB needs a fresh start which in his view is only possible without Koch holding any kind of function at the world’s largest single sports federation with more than 7 million members.

Koch has said he won’t run for vice-president again while Peters is considering a bid for the presidency at the DFB assembly in March 2022.
