German highway closed after damages from out-of-control lorry

An approximately 10-kilometre stretch of a key German highway was shut down overnight into Sunday after a lorry driver suffered a medical problem while driving.

He lost control of the vehicle and leaving a 30-kilometre trail of damage, police say.

The incident affects the A3 highway. The closed-off stretch was between Frankfurt and Nuremberg.

Police say the 48-year-old driver lost control of the lorry “obviously due to a medical reason” late on Saturday. The vehicle then struck guardrails multiple times and also went through a construction site, knocking down multiple warning signs.

Some of the obstacles were knocked down with such force they were propelled into the other lane of traffic.

Authorities managed to bring the driver to a stop near Wuerzburg. He was quickly taken to hospital. No other injuries were reported. The highway is now reopened after a short closure.
