Cologne could face fine for fans ignoring mask obligation

Cologne could face a fine after many fans ignored the requirement to wear masks during Saturday’s 4-1 victory over Borussia Moenchengladbach in a sold-out Rhine derby.

City authorities tweeted Sunday that they were looking into the issue and action could be taken.

Rapidly increasing coronavirus infections in Germany led many local authorities to drastically restrict fan numbers at Bundesliga matches but Cologne could welcome 50,000 – who were supposed to wear masks throughout the game.

Pictures showed that clearly it was not observed by everyone and Cologne will be investigated to determine whether they did enough to try to enforce the rules.
