New German minister pedals in Green style to date with president

Germany’s new agriculture minister, Cem Ozdemir, chose an electric bicycle as transport on his way to and from the president’s palace to receive his official appointment on Wednesday.

As his colleagues climbed into limousines, Ozdemir, a member of the Green Party, took to his bike for the short trip from the Bundestag to President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s Bellevue Palace.

After the brief ceremony, he mounted his bike again, clamping his certificate of appointment onto the carrier, as images shown on television revealed.

The 55-year-old signalled his compliance with convention in safety-conscious Germany by wearing a helmet.
