Bayern’s Lewandowski proud to follow in Mueller’s footsteps

Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski is proud to be considered alongside club and Germany legend Gerd Mueller at the end of a record-breaking year for the Poland striker.

“For me it is a big honour to be there with such a great name and such a great personality,” the 33-year-old Lewandowski told Bild’s television channel after he was named ‘Star of the Year’ by the Sport Bild magazine.

Lewandowski’s goal in Bayern’s 4-0 demolition of Wolfsburg on Friday earned him his latest record in 2021 as his 43rd Bundesliga goal of the calendar year – breaking Mueller’s best of 42 from 1972

“There are also records that you can’t break,” said Lewandowski, who has maintained he does not thinking about which best marks he could achieve

Lewandowski beat Mueller’s once eternal total of 40 goals from 1971/72 with 41 last season. Mueller’s all-time record of 365 goals could also be within reach as Lewandowski currently has 296.
