Ryanair gives up base at Frankfurt airport

Europe’s largest low-cost airline Ryanair is giving up its base at Frankfurt Airport after five years, the company announced on Friday.

The five aircraft still stationed there will be redistributed to cheaper airports as of March 31, it said in a statement, giving as an example Nuremberg Airport, where two planes are to be based in future.

Ryanair said its decision was based on a rise in take-off and landing fees at Germany’s largest airport at the turn of the year.

“Instead of giving Ryanair an incentive to stay and grow, Frankfurt has chosen to drive away traffic and jobs by increasing airport charges,” the statement said.

Ryanair director of commercial Jason McGuiness also accused the German government of “massively” distorting competition with its 9-billion-euro bailout of Lufthansa in 2020.

Passengers impacted by the closure of the Frankfurt base are to be notified in the coming days and will receive refunds, Ryanair said.

The company also said it is offering alternative positions for the affected crews within its rapidly growing European network.
