Beijing (dpa) – Speed skating great Claudia Pechstein and bobsledder Francesco Friedrich will carry the Germany flag at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Winter Games on Friday, the DOSB confederation has said.
The pair will be the first flag-bearing duo at a Winter Games after the practice was introduced at the delayed Tokyo 2020 last summer.
Pechstein, 49, is Germany’s record Olympian attending her eighth Games with five gold medals, along with two silver and two bronze, from previous editions.
Friedrich, 31, took double gold at Pyeongchang 2018 in both the two and four-man bobs and also has a string of world titles to his name.
The ceremony at the Bird’s Nest stadium in central Beijing opens the Games which will run to February 20.
Pechstein and Friedrich were elected via a weighted vote from athletes and fans.
