German great Rummenigge included in Italian football hall of fame

Karl Heinz-Rummenigge will be inducted into the Italian football hall of fame, the country’s governing FIGC said late Thursday.

The highly decorated Rummenigge, the former long-standing chairman of Bayern Munich, will be the first German included in the role honour since the practice was established in 2011.

Rummenigge, 66, will be entered under the ‘foreign players’ category, which already includes former stars such as Michel Platini, Diego Maradona and Marco van Basten, having played for Inter Milan 1984-1987.

Other inductees in 2022 include Italian World Cup winner Alessandro Nesta and coach Antonio Conte.

Denmark’s Simon Kjaer will be given a special award for his role in saving team-mate Christian Eriksen after he collapsed with a heart problem in last year’s delayed Euro 2020.
