German fan alliance opposes Bundesliga championship play-offs idea

German fan alliance Unsere Kurve has said it is firmly against considerations to introduce championship play-offs in the Bundesliga.

“It is significant that a new game format is being discussed instead of tackling the real problems that lead to a lack of competition at the top,” the organization told dpa on Thursday.

“We don’t need new formats and competitions that flush more money into football through even more marketing. We need regulations that ensure the integrity of the competition,” it said.

Measures would include a more equal distribution of broadcasting money as well as the introduction of a national financial fair play, “the urgently needed salary cap” in football and the prevention of multiple investments.

New German football league (DFL) boss Donata Hopfen last weekend brought the play-off idea to the table in view of Bayern Munich’s possible 10th consecutive title.

“The league would of course be more attractive if it had more competition at the top,” she told Sunday paper Bild am Sonntag.

“If the play-offs help us, then we will talk about it. But we must also not forget that Bayern have done a great job in recent years,” Hopfen added.”

Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn said he would be open to the possible new format.

“I think it’s exciting to think about new models like play-offs for the Bundesliga. A format with semi-finals and finals would mean excitement for fans,” the told the Kicker sports magazine.

The Bundesliga already has a play-off system for promotion/relegation between its 16th-placed team and the third-place finisher from the second tier, which is widely criticized by fans.
