Pakistan India hold talks over disputed hydropower projects

Islamabad (HRNW) A three-day 117th meeting of the Permanent Commission on Indus Water (PCIW) has started in Islamabad on Tuesday to discuss Indian hydropower projects that Pakistan Pakistan says are being constructed in violation of the Indus Water Treaty.

The agenda of the talks include discussions on the design aspects of Pakal Dul, Lower Kalnai and Miyar hydroelectric plants, flood data supplied by India, and a program of tours of inspection and meetings by Pakistan and India to the sites of their interest in the Indus Basin.

In this regard, a nine-member delegation, headed by the Indian Water Commissioner PK Saxena has arrived in Lahore from Wagah Border.

Pakistan’s team will be chaired by Meher Ali Shah, the Indus Water Commissioner.

During the meeting, Pakistan will raise objections to various Indian new Run-of-River Hydro-Electric plant, sources say.

The matter relating to sharing of flood information by the Indian side would also be reviewed.

Ministry for Water Resources says the Kerot hydropower project on River Chenab was a violation of the agreement.

They also have objections over the construction of Durbuk Shyok, Nimu Chilling, Kiru, Tamasha, Kalaroos-II, Baltikulan Small, Kargil Hunderman, Phagla, Kulan Ramwari and Mandi dams.

The participants will also finalize and sign the record of the last PCIW meeting.
