Germany’s Zverev involved in getting Davis Cup to Hamburg

Critic Alexander Zverev is seeing improvement in the Davis Cup format and is now involved in trying to get the team event to his birth town of Hamburg.

Zverev told dpa at the Indian Wells Masters that “things are looking very good and hopefully we can bring the German team and the Davis Cup to Hamburg.”

The German Tennis Federation had said on the weekend it was looking into hosting games and that Zverev was aiming to help.

The world number three returned to the team event for the first time since 2019 last week and won both singles rubbers as Germany beat Brazil in a qualifier in Rio de Janeiro.

Germany are among the 16 teams competing in a group stage in September, four groups in four yet to be named cities. The top two from each group advance to the knock-out stages to be played at a neutral venue in late November.

“A business partner and I are working on getting the Davis Cup to Germany and for that we first of all had to qualify,” Zverev said.

“We have submitted an offer to the team that stages the Davis Cup, and the question is whether they accept it or not.”

Zverev said he was in close contact with former Barcelona football Gerard Pique who is a key investor in the event.

The German had initially criticised the new format which did away with the past home or away ties and had the finals at one venue in December.

He said splitting the ties and not playing everything in December, plus bringing in more cities, is “a huge step in the right direction.

“I am trying to be open-minded, especially now that I can be part of the event and we as the German team can play in Germany. It would be a big highlight for me to play in Hamburg,” he said.
