Mainz succeed in bid for postponement of second Bundesliga match

Mainz have been granted a second Bundesliga postponement by German Football League (DFL) because they are still suffering from a coronavirus outbreak within their ranks.

The club said Thursday that the request had been granted and a new date for the match would be communicated in due course.

Mainz said on Wednesday they still don’t have enough eligible players to contest the game.

The club reported 20 positive cases last week, 14 of them players and among those all three goalkeepers. As a result, last Sunday’s game against Borussia Dortmund was moved to March 16.

The mandatory quarantine period for a number of players would only end of Friday, provided they test negative by then, which would have made a normal preparation for the game in Augsburg impossible.

Under coronavirus rules clubs can request a postponement if they have less than 16 players available, nine of them first team squad members and one goalkeeper. However, available players include those who are injured or suspended.
