Dortmund part ways with coach Marco Rose, Terzic return?

Berlin (dpa) – Borussia Dortmund said on Friday they have parted ways with coach Marco Rose after just one year, and there were soon reports that Edin Terzic could return to the helm in his place.

Dortmund are the fifth Bundesliga club in need of a new helmsman within the past six days.

Rose, 45, came to Dortmund last year from Borussia Mönchengladbach but the team played an inconsistent season, never able to challenge Bayern Munich who claimed a 10th straight title, and going out early in the Champions League and the German Cup.

Dortmund said the decision was made in a season-ending analysis involving Rose and top officials led by chief executive officer Hans-Joachim Watzke on Thursday.

“The day was not an easy one for all of us, as we have all held each other in high regard and continue to do so. After a season that was unsatisfactory for various reasons, we were forced to conclude that we did not achieve the maximum possible in many areas,” Watzke said.

Rose said: “Despite a difficult season with many uncertainties, I was convinced by our path. During our discussion, I developed the impression there was no longer a 100% conviction among all those responsible. We therefore ultimately decided together to end the cooperation.”

Rose’s departure at Gladbach last year set an extraordinary merry-go-round at the helm in motion, with Adi Hütter joining Gladbach from Eintracht Frankfurt where Oliver Glasner took over in a move from Wolfsburg, plus Julian Nagelsmann going to Munich from RB Leipzig.

Nagelsmann and freshly crowned Europa League champ Glasner are the only ones still in charge, with Hütter and Gladbach parting ways on Saturday, Jesse Marsch long out in Leipzig, and Wolfsburg going through two coaches in Mark van Bommel and Florian Kohfeldt.

Kohfeldt had to go a few days ago along with Hütter, Hoffenheim’s Sebastian Hoeneß followed in mid-week, and Markus Weinzierl resigned at Augsburg, with Rose now the fifth man out in six days since the season finale.

Rose last year took over from Terzic who was made interim coach following the autumn 2020 departure of Lucien Favre. Former assistant coach Terzic achieved stability, led Dortmund into the Champions League and won the German Cup with them in his final game in charge.

Popular Terzic was made technical director and Sky TV said Friday he would now return to the coaching bench and become the successor of Rose, with the deal to be announced on the weekend. Kicker sports magazine also named Terzic the likely new coach.

There was no confirmation from Dortmund who only said that there would be talks on the issue “over the coming days.”

Dortmund aim for a serious title challenge next season and for that have already signed three German international players: forward Karim Adeyemi and defenders Nico Schlotterbeck and Niklas Süle.

But they have lost star striker Erling Haaland to Manchester City and midfielder Axel Witsel has also left.
