German league proposes new coronavirus concept for Bundesliga season

Frankfurt (dpa) – The German football league (DFL) and German football federation (DFB) on Wednesday published details of a reworked hygiene concept for the coming season which has been sent to clubs in the top two division.

Members of the Bundesliga and second division will vote on the proposals at an extraordinary general meeting on September 3. The concept for the third division, German Cup and women’s Bundesliga will simultaneously work its way through the DFB.

The concept continues to propose strict hygiene rules, regular testing for the coronavirus and organizational adjustments to matches and training.

A change includes the amount of testing done being related to the number of infections in a club’s local area. An new infection rate of more than 35 per 100,000 people a week is considered ‘high’ and 5-35 ‘medium’ on the scale – both require two tests per week.

The level ‘low’ is for fewer than 5 infections per 100,000 people each week and testing must then only be carried out once per week.

At the highest level of infection the last test before a match must be done within 36 hours of kick-off. The other levels have a testing window of 52 hours to the game.

The Bundesliga resumes September 18 with German politicians set to discuss Thursday whether fans can be readmitted to stadiums.
