Mainz given cup home advantage by lower league Havelse

Hanover, Germany (dpa) – Fourth-tier Havelse will give up home advantage in their German Cup first round tie with Bundesliga side Mainz due to difficulties in hosting the match amid the coronavirus crisis.

“We have decided it with a heavy heart,” said coach and sporting leader Jan Zimmermann to Sportbuzzer following a club meeting late Tuesday.

“Due to the conditions, rules and the short time, it was impossible for us to play in Havelse.”

The match will now take place on a to-be-decided date September 11-14. Cup ties will take place either without fans or a very limited number in stadiums due to the coronavirus pandemic and with health precautions in place.

Other amateur clubs such as Eintracht Norderstedt have already given up home advantage against higher level opposition.
