Wolfsburg sign defender Baku until 2025 from Mainz

Hanover (dpa) – Wolfsburg said on Thursday they have signed defender Ridle Baku from Bundesliga rivals Mainz on a five-year-contract until 2025.

No details were given but the 22-year-old of Congolese descent is said to cost Wolfsburg less than 10 million euros (11.7 dollars).

Mainz-born Baku played 50 Bundesliga matches for the club he joined as a boy and is also a German under-21 international.

“I owe everything to Mainz and the club will always have a special place in my heart,” he said.

“But I felt that it was time to take the next step in my development and I find the best conditions for this in Wolfsburg.”

Wolfsburg sports director Marcel Schaefer said: “Ridle convinced us with his sporting development and in our talks. He is young, hungry for success and can completely identify with the path we have chosen.”

Baku is Wolfsburg’s third summer signing and could make his debut for them in Sunday’s Bundesliga game against Augsburg.
