Germany to enact sweeping contact restrictions for month of November

Berlin (dpa) – Germany’s federal and state governments have agreed to enact sweeping contact restrictions for the month of November in a bid to stem coronavirus infections, sources involved in talks between regional leaders and Chancellor Angela Merkel tell dpa.

The restrictions, which have not yet been specified, would come into effect on November 2, they said.

According to the government’s position paper, Merkel is seeking to limit outdoor gatherings to no more than two households. She is also seeking the closure of restaurants, bars, hotels and other businesses, while keeping schools and essential shops open.

The proposed November shutdown is intended to bring down soaring case numbers ahead of the Christmas season so that families can celebrate together.
