Mick Schumacher readies for F1 test as Haas leave door open for seat

Berlin (dpa) – Mick Schumacher’s hopes of being given a Formula One seat next season have been boosted by comments from Haas team boss Guenther Steiner.

“We will make an announcement soon,” he told reporters on Thursday before this weekend’s Bahrain Grand Prix.

Mick, son of seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher, leads the second-tier F2 standings with two events left to the end of the season.

The 21-year-old is seen as a likely favourite for a step up to F1 with Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen set to leave struggling US team Haas.

Ferrari sporting director Laurent Mekies confirmed on Wednesday that Mick would be at the junior driver test in Abu Dhabi in mid-December.

The younger Schumacher is part of the Italian team’s young driver academy and they have deals with Haas and Alfa Romeo, but it is not yet clear which he will drive for at the test.

Alfa Romeo will continue with Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi next season.

Mick was meant to drive at an F1 weekend for the first time in practice for Alfa Romeo at Germany’s Eifel Grand Prix in October, but bad weather scuppered the plans.
