Lewandowski deserves World Player award, his Munich coach Flick says

Bayern Munich coach Hansi Flick hopes that his top striker Robert Lewandowski will be named World Footballer of the year on Thursday while not talking about his own changes in the coaching award.

“Being named the world’s best on Thursday would definitely be a dream-come-true for him. Nobody deserves it more than him this year. We would all like to see him win the vote,” Flick told reporters on Tuesday.

Poland’s Lewandowski was top scorer in the Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League last season as Bayern won the treble, before also winning the German and European Super Cup in September.

He is on the final shortlist Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi of Barcelona who have won the prestigious award the past 12 years between them.

Flick is on the coaching shortlist with Liverpool’s Juergen Klopp and Marcelo Bielsa from Leeds United but said that was “secondary” as his focus was on Wednesday’s Bundesliga match against Wolfsburg.

Lewandowski could well improve on his league leading tally of 13 in that game as he has scored 21 goals in his previous 19 games against Wolfsburg – famously including five within a span of nine minutes in Bayern’s 5-1 win in September 2015.
