Coach Svensson gets Mainz contract till 2024, urges winning mentality

New Mainz coach Bo Svensson is to receive a contract until 2024 in his return to the ailing Bundesliga club he wants to save from relegation with a winning mentality.

“Identity is the key for me. The way we want to present ourselves and play,” the 41-year-old Dane said at his presentation on Tuesday.

“There is no guarantee of winning in Mainz. But you can bring aggressiveness and willpower onto the pitch. That will be ruthlessly enforced.”

Mainz are second bottom on six points from 14 games with just one season victory.

Svensson is the fourth coach this term, following Achim Beierlorzer, Jan-Moritz Lichte and one-game caretaker Jan Siewert, joining from Austrian second division side Liefering.

He was previously a Mainz youth coach from 2014-2019 having retired from playing at the club for seven years in 2014.

“Mainz has a special place in my heart, not only the club but the city is a very important part and that was a big factor in my decision,” he said.

Svensson said he and his staff are analysing the squad and would not rule out reinforcements in the current transfer window. He also pledged to strengthen the ties between the first team and the youth sector “to give talents the chance to move up to the pros.”

Svensson’s first match is on Saturday against regional rivals Eintracht Frankfurt.

Board member sport Christian Heidel, also back at the club, said Svensson got a long-term deal because “we want to start a new project. The contract is valid for the Bundesliga and second division.”
