Bayern Munich’s Mueller says Olympic Games not a target

Bayern Munich forward Thomas Mueller said the 2020 Olympic Games postponed to this year due to the coronavirus pandemic are not a target for him personally.

“The Olympics have no role in my plans,” he told the Bild newspaper on Friday.

“I informed Stefan Kuntz [under-21 coach] about this a long time ago,” the former world champion said.

On Thursday dpa learnt Mueller wasn’t on the provisional list of players that had to be submitted to Germany’s Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) at the beginning of the year for potential inclusion in the squad.

Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels and Max Kruse of Union Berlin, who are both 32, can still hope for a chance at the Olympics as their names are on the list.

Hummels and Mueller, 31, won the 2014 World Cup together and were then in early 2019 dropped from the national team by coach Joachim Loew.

The Olympic tournament is an under-23 event but each team can pick three older players in addition. Germany won silver at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.c
