Woman and toddler die in fire at German refugee shelter

A 31-year-old woman and a 2-year-old child died when a fire broke out at a shelter for asylum seekers in central Germany on Sunday evening, police said.

A 34-year-old man suffering from burn injures was airlifted to hospital for treatment, according to the Upper Franconia police headquarters.

The cause of the fire in the town of Kronach was still unclear, however a criminal investigation was launched.

According to initial findings, one apartment in the building complex had started to burn in the early evening, when several residents were inside.

Due to the fire damage, no one was able to return to their accommodation after the fire was extinguished. Temporary rooms were found for the residents, local officials said.
