Neuer hails departing players and boss: Bayern’s most successful team

Captain Manuel Neuer has paid tribute to Bayern Munich’s departing players and coach Hansi Flick after the Bundesliga season concluded with a 5-2 victory over Augsburg at the weekend.

“It is seen over the seasons – that we have been the most successful team in the history of Bayern,” Neuer said in an interview published on the club homepage Monday. “With all the successes, it’s all the better that I played side by side with many of the guys for such a long time and that we shaped such an era.

“Therefore it is of course a shame that one or other leaves the club in the summer.”

Nine consecutive Bundesliga titles have been won by Bayern, who also claimed a second treble with German Cup and Champions League under Flick in 2020.

“We know that we have set an all-time record,” said Neuer. “Before every season there is the goal to build on that.”

David Alaba, Jerome Boateng and Javi Martinez have accompanied Neuer on his decade of glory in Munich.

“I have experienced only one title without the boys in my career to date, the cup win with Schalke in 2011,” he said. “I was even European Under-21 champion in 2009 with Jerome.

“I can only thank them. They know that they have also found friends for life here in the past years.”

Flick, who took over with Bayern struggling in November 2019, delivered four further competition victories in addition to the treble.

“These successes are there forever,” said Neuer. “We will not forget that and must already think of doing a trip to Lisbon (where Bayern won the Champions League last season) with the team.”
