Coronavirus case at Bayern Munich’s German Cup opponents

Fifth-tier Bremer SV have been hit by a coronavirus case three days before their German Cup first-round tie with Bayern Munich.

Ralf Voigt, sport chief at the Bremen club, confirmed to dpa on Tuesday that a player had tested positive for the virus and gone into quarantine.

Voigt said that a further round of tests had been carried out on players, coaches and staff after the positive case on Monday.

“We’re in close contact with the health authority and the DFB (German football federation) and are now waiting on the results,” he said.

Voigt believes Friday’s match, which will mark Julian Nagelsmann’s competitive debut as Bayern coach, is not in danger should the remaining tests return negative.

Cup holders Borussia Dortmund said their Belgium full back Thomas Meunier has also tested positive for virus.

The 29-year-old Meunier, who played at Euro 2020, tested positive ahead of his return to training following a day off, according to Dortmund.

Ahead of travelling to a recent team training camp in Switzerland, Meunier twice tested negative and did so again before returning from Bad Ragaz.

Dortmund begin their cup defence away to Wehen Wiesbaden on Saturday, a week ahead of the opening round of Bundesliga fixtures.
