Augsburg stay third-bottom after errors help Mainz to 4-1 win

Lowly Augsburg were the masters of their own downfall with big mistakes in Mainz’s 4-1 Bundesliga home win on Friday.

Markus Weinzierl’s Augsburg remain third-from bottom, on six points from nine games, after Germany under-21 forward Jonathan Burkardt hit a brace and again shone for the hosts.

Mainz, who had lost their last three, moved up to sixth with their fourth win of the campaign.

Augsburg’s Polish defender Robert Gumny completely missed the ball when trying to clear a cross in the 10th minute, allowing Karim Onisiwo to cut inside and score his first of the league season.

“We started the game badly and conceded a stupid goal,” Augsburg midfielder Arne Maier told DAZN.

The visitors then gave the ball away in their own half and Mainz quickly pounced, Burkardt playing in defender Stefan Bell to score through Rafal Gikiewicz’s legs from a tight angle.

Burkardt then added a header at the far post after just 26 minutes.

Augsburg pulled one back midway through the second period through
Andi Zeqiri but Burkardt made the game safe soon afterwards, with the away side again losing possession before conceding.

Mainz’s Dominik Kohr said: “It is a while since we had a feeling like that. I’m happy when the forwards score, that’s their job.”

Champions and leaders Bayern Munich host Hoffenheim on Saturday with coach Julian Nagelsmann not attending due to a coronavirus infection.

Borussia Dortmund, a point behind in second, visit Arminia Bielefeld with star striker Erling Haaland out injured again.
