German lawmakers elect new Bundestag president

Social Democrat (SPD) politician Baerbel Bas has been elected as the new president of the German parliament, the Bundestag.

Bas received a broad majority in the first constituent session of the parliament on Tuesday, with 576 out of 724 lawmakers voting for her.

Bundestag president is one of the highest-ranking offices in the state.

The office is usually held by the largest parliamentary group in the Bundestag, which after September’s elections now falls to the SPD. Bas is only the third woman to hold the office.
