Faghir next Stuttgart player to test positive for coronavirus

Forward Wahid Faghir has becaome the fifth VfB Stuttgart player to test positive for the coronavirus, the Bundesliga club said on Monday.

Stuttgart tweeted Faghir went into isolation after a PCR test, taken after a previous inconclusive antigen test, returned positive.

Silas Katompa Mvumpa, Naouirou Ahamada, Konstantinos Mavropanos and Mateo Klimowicz are the other Stuttgart players who have contracted the Sars-Cov-2 virus ahead of their Saturday game at bottom club Greuther.

Wolfsburg managing director Jörg Schmadtke has meanwhile expressed fear that matches could be cancelled owing to the virus, like in England’s Premier League and other sports leagues.

“I have fears, although not for the upcoming weekend. But I believe Corona will play a role in the match calendar,” Schmadtke told the Sportbuzzer portal.

Sportbuzzer said that at least 10 of the 18 Bundesliga clubs have infected players within their ranks.

The league restarts from a short winter break on Friday when leaders Bayern Munich host Borussia Mönchengladbach. Bayern on the weekend announced four infected players, including Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Schamdtke’s club has Kevin Mbabu and Dodi Lukebakio sidelined and he said they have tightened measures including re-introducing daily tests.
