German leagues decide against sanctioning individual Russians

The Russian invasion of Ukraine will have no influence on several German domestic sports leagues as individual players will not face suspensions, including in the football Bundesliga.

Handball’s continental governing body excluded Russian and Belarusian clubs from international competitions on Monday but Germany’s domestic HBL will not impose sanctions.

“The question didn’t come up,” HBL chief executive Frank Bohmann told dpa on Tuesday. A suspension of the two Russian players in the league – Azat Valiullin of HSV Hamburg and Gleb Kalarash of MT Melsungen – would “not have been fair.”

Football’s Bundesliga will not prevent individual players competing with their clubs, a spokesperson told dpa.

Russian ice hockey players in the DEL will also be permitted to play, a spokesperson said. Volleyball’s Bundesliga wants to adhere to the guidelines of the international federation but there is presently no legal basis for exclusions.
