Minister of state for culture visits Yad Vashem memorial site

German Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth says she will do everything in her power to ensure that Jews in Germany and Israel can “live in self-determination and peace.”

Roth visited the Holocaust memorial Yad Vashem in Jerusalem on Sunday at the start of a three-day inaugural visit to Israel. She also laid a wreath there on behalf of the German government.

“The memory of the horror of the Shoah, of the suffering and death of millions of people, is particularly painful here, in this place,” she wrote in the guest book, using the Hebrew word for the Holocaust.

“We see the images of people. They imprint themselves on us. They leave us with a feeling of deep shame and grief. Mourning for the cruelly murdered.” She bows to the victims, she said.

During her visit, the Green politician also wants to exchange views with Israeli artists as well as representatives of German political foundations.

On Monday, she plans to meet Israeli Minister of Culture Hili Tropper. According to her office, Roth also wants to promote the establishment of the planned German-Israeli Youth Office.

It is her second bilateral trip after her inaugural visit to France.
