Alaba contract talks break down as Bayern withdraw offer

Defender David Alaba has left his plans for the future open after Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich withdrew their offer to renew his contract which expires at the end of the season.

“I really enjoy playing for Bayern,” he told a news conference Monday. “I feel content and happy to be a part of this team. We’ll see how things go from here.”

The 28-year-old Austrian international was surprised to learn of the club’s move on Monday and was disappointed to discover through the media the offer had been withdrawn.

Alaba said he was looking forward to Tuesday’s Champions League trip home to face RB Salzburg and that he had not yet had time to consider his response to the club.

Coach Hansi Flick, however, was clear in wishing that Alaba remains in Munich.

“I would be delighted if David stayed, because he’s a great player and person,” he said. “He’s well liked in the team and club.

“I’m convinced that, as he has done in previous games, he will continue to bring quality performances and do all he can to help Bayern be successful.”

Club president Herbert Hainer told local broadcasters BR late Sunday that the club withdrew the offer to renew beyond the current season because it was not satisfactory for the Alaba camp in talks that have been going on for months.

“We have decided to completely take the offer off the table. That means there is no longer an offer,” Hainer said.

Alaba has been at Bayern since 2008, with a brief exception in 2011, and won every title on offer with them, including two Champions Leagues. He has been a key player, as full back and centre back, for years.

Hainer said “we appreciate him a lot” and would “regret it if we had to go separate ways after the season” but that it was now time for his camp to position itself in the talks.

Other long-time Bayern players like goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and Thomas Mueller have renewed their contracts this year while Thiago Alcantara left in summer for English champions Liverpool.

Alaba, should he not sign a new deal, could leave for free in summer 2021.

Hainer made it clear that Munich would be looking at possible replacements because “we owe it to the club and the fans and want planning security for this important position.”

Alaba also complained that discussions about his salary negotiations had been leaked to the media.

“I can assure every single fan that the sums which have been passed round do not reflect the truth,” he said.
