Munich’s Christmas market to take place online

Munich (dpa) – Munich’s famous Christmas market is to take place online due to the pandemic, local authorities in the capital of Germany’s state of Bavaria announced on Thursday.

Instead of buying mulled wine and snacks while strolling across the market, people can visit the city’s website to order these things online and enjoy them at home.

The website offers a range of Christmas items including baubles and other decorations, candied almonds, gifts as well as nativity sets.

Mulled wine is also on offer, though it still has to be heated at home.

The city also came up with remote activities such as an online Christmas carol singalong, which is to begin on December 1 via an online Advent calendar.

Although this could not replace the real market, it is “a nice support” for Munich’s “traditional event and offers a familiar holiday spirit for [people] at home,” said Clemens Baugaertner, head of the city’s office for labour and economy.
