Court grills Sindh IG over appointment of ‘criminal’ police officers

Karachi (HRNW) An irked Sindh High Court came down on Sindh Inspector-General Mushtaq Ahmed Mahar Tuesday over the appointment of criminal officers in the police force.

On March 15, it resumed hearing a case pertaining to the illegal appointment and promotion of police officers.

During the proceeding, Justice Aftab Ahmed Gorar remarked that policemen involved in grave crimes such as murder have been awarded the post of SHO.

“Manzoor Chandio [an inspector] killed three people in cold blood and then compromised with the poor family,” he said. “How is this possible?”

The inspector, the judge stressed, should have been sentenced to death. “Do you know what a compromise means? It clearly shows that he confessed to the crime.”

“What are you doing as the chief of police,” Justice Gorar thundered at one point. “Your men are looting citizens. They’re forcefully occupying land. Is it not your responsibility to take action against them?”

Or have you given them [police officers] a free hand, he added.
