Rasheed rules out minus Imran, expects mammoth rally

Islamabad (HRNW) Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed has ruled out the possibility of a minus Imran Khan PTI government – a proposal first discussed by PTI’s allies on a TV show.

At a press conference in Islamabad, Rasheed said he expected a mammoth rally of PTI supporters on March 27 in response to Imran Khan’s call.

Rasheed also said that no decision on imposing the governor’s rule in Sindh province has been made yet, though he had moved a summary to Imran Khan. “It was my personal opinion that whatever was happening in Sindh House, I was in favour of imposing emergency and governor’s rule in Sindh. I presented a summary to the PM but no decision has been taken. There’s still time.”

Rasheed said days between March 24 and April 4 are important due to heightened political activities. He confirmed that cricket matches have been moved to Lahore from Rawalpindi due to security issues.

He said a total of 8,000 policemen were available and out of these 3,000 were deployed at the stadium and airport. The government is calling in more Rangers, bringing the number to 2,000, he said.

Rasheed said that Imran Khan’s rally on March 27 was the biggest challenge and urged the opposition to hold talks about routes to avoid a clash.

“Bigger issue is PM rally and opposition’s rally. We want that we decide about the routes and venues of these rallies with mutual consultation. I have directed the DC Islamabad to meet the local leadership of PTI and the opposition and decide about separate routes for rallies. We have no room for confrontation. God forbid, if these rallies end up in confrontation.”

He said the National Assembly speaker will decide on the date for the NA session on the no-trust motion. “If he convenes on March 20-21, then he has 7-9 days. It remains to be seen how these four holidays will be accommodated.”

He said PPP’s decision to deploy “a squad of 480 or even 580

personnel in Sindh House” could lead to confrontation.
